So, at my house someone usually makes some sort of treat on Sundays. Its just always been that way. I think I am actually the one who started it. I just love sweet carbs and I was always baking something. Well recently my little brother has taken a fondness to the Food Network and to cooking things. He watched a show called "Good Eats" and on this show they give the history and sometimes the molecular make up of one type of food. Well the one he watched was on Pocket pies. So he decided he wanted to make some of his own. He started the dough and asked if I would help with the fillings.
So I made a delicious Peach pie filling and a chocolate pudding filling. we spent over an hour getting them ready and cooking them. We decided to pan fry some and bake some. We had some peach ones that were finally cool enough to eat and I took a bite. Something wasn't right. My Brother looked at me and said.. "You're just messing with me .. right? Remember you are the one who made the filling" I replied with a mouth full of pie. "It isn't the filling" He took a bite and had to agree. I asked him if the Oil we fried it in was rancid and then he said. "Well the shortening I used smelled a little funny" So I went to the cupboard and pulled it out and it was VERY rancid. It smelt like Kerosene, and so did our little pocket pies.

well.. if it makes you feel any better, they look really yummy! This time was just a practice session...
I hope he doesn't get discouraged to try again. I know that stuff like that that I did when I was first starting to cook made me think I was a bad cook. p.s. I LOVE the show Good Eats!
oh bummer! you've got to try again and tell me how they taste, they sound fun and yummy--minus the kerosene flavoring of course!
That is just too bad. I couldn't wait to invite myself over to try out your chocolate ones!
Well they look good! I've had some flubs in the kitchen....I'll have many more flubs in the kitchen.....me and the kitchen......we aint too hip on each other.....
Oh man! This story is even better the second time around. Poor Matt. Hopefully his desire to cook will not be thwarted by a little Kerosene...ha!
